Hazel Summerville

Mum thought this was Hazel and her. 1936

My Aunt Hazel is mum's older sister. She was born in Newport, Virginia on 25 Nov, 1919, where my grandmother lived during the time my grandfather was in the army. She was nearly six years older than my mother, and mum always felt Hazel was had beautiful hair, and nicer looks, as well as being older.

I think there must have been most to it than that. The estrangement seems to have been long-established and deep-seated.  Mum did say that Hazel was much older, and so they never really played or socialised. I feel that is a bit odd, since I socialised with all my sisters, including the youngest who was 8 years my junior. Perhaps that was easier for me, since I had all 5 of my siblings as a chain within that 8 year span.

The picture to the right is of the girls in 1936. Hazel was 18, Mum was 12, about to enter high school. Caroline and Mink (Mindabelle) are their cousins from Georgia. Mink, sitting arm and arm with mum, were virtually the same age.

Hazel actually got married later that same year. On 25 May, 1936, she married Donald Vincent Stewart.

As far as I know, she had two children, Michael and Donna. Both visited us at some point. Mike was in the navy, and was, I believe, posted at Mare Island.

She divorced Donald in the 40s. On 13 March, 1954 she married a second time, to Arthur Dale Uber, who was five years her senior.

I say as far as I know because we really didn't get to know my Hazel, or her children. The situation between she and my mother became worse after my grandfather died. My mother wanted to come out for the funeral, but Hazel had him buried almost immediately. Though mum flew out as soon as possible after hearing he had died, she arrived and found her father had already been interred.

I believe Hazel lived most of her life in Ohio. She and Dale Uber lived in Vienna, Trumbull, Ohio. Dale died 27 Aug 1993. Hazel died 24 Nov 1994 in Warren, Ohio. I know that her daughter, Donna, was a great help to my great-aunt Belle before her death.

A few housekeeping things.

I don't like propietary things, and in particular, believe proprietary information is anathema to spreading knowledge and understanding. Hence, feel free to use my info, but I state that I do not want it used for profit. I have spent many many hours on it, and am happy to see others benefit. To paraphrase Michael Valintine Smith, "knowledge shared is knowledge multiplied". I do consider my work to be copywrite, and give permission for its use only where it remains in the domain of free information. Of course it would be nice, and ethical, if those using it acknowledged the source, and nicer still if you let me know.

Nor would I like it to be copied to Family Search or the IGA, (that means don't do it) mainly because those sites do not provide the evidence on which information is based, and are therefore prone to spread dis-information.
