James Glennie was 22 when Ann Thom gave birth to his children, twins Jessie and Alexander Glennie. James was born on 13 October, 1843 in Mains of Wardhouse, Insch, Aberdeen, Scotland. This large croft can be seen on the map below, on the top left corner of the map. |
From the 1851 Census, there is a picture of James Duncan, a major crofter, living with his wife and grandson. Two servants live there in the main house. In a second house is James' daughter Jane, who is married to Peter Glennie. The younger grandson, George, is living with his parents. Elspet Reid is Jame's Duncan's mother, living in her own house.

Later, we find that James Duncan will effectively inherit the croft and become the "farmer", with control of the property. It seems that the 1851 census reflects a family situation, in which James Duncan had only one living child, his daughter Jane. Jane was married but her father did not see her husband as a potential heir, and so raised young James Glennie in his own home, while his daughter, her husband and other son lived in a smaller house on the property, as did his mother.
The will of James Duncan supports this notion. James died in 1852, and left 2/3 of his estate to his wife, Mary Philp Duncan. One third was held in trust for his daughter Jane and her children, with specification that Peter Glennie (or any future husband) would have no claim on the money. The will also specifies that the money held in trust for Jane should not be used for any debts of Peter Glennie. I'm not certain when Mary Duncan died, but most probably the money went to a trust to provide a regular income for Jane, and some to James Glennie.
James Glennie was 22 when he married Mary Michie on the 31st of May, 1866 in Rothiemay, Banff. This is two months after the birth of James' two children by Ann Thom, who was perhaps considered unsuitable, being a servant, and an older woman who already had one child out of wedlock. I have not been able to find a Mary Michie meeting the criteria for James' wife in Banffshire so far, and so can't give much information on them.
The 1871 census give a picture with James living as the crofter with his family at Little Mains. The family consisted of his wife Mary, his 5 year old daughter Janet, and baby son George. There is a 17 year old farm servant, James Christie living with them, and Jane Glennie, James' mother, is living, alone, in the small house on the property. By the 1881 census The family living at home consisted of his wife Mary, his 11 year old son George, and his 6 year old daughter Jane, called after James' mother. He also had a servant, Charles Stewart, a 36 year old single man working as a shepherd. Janet, who would be 15 by then, is absent, as is his mother, Jane.
In the Insch cemetary is the family plot, with James Duncan, and his wife Mary Philip, Peter Glennie, and other Glennies.
